Review: The Town

September 19, 2010 By Thelma Leave a Comment

Rebecca Hall, Ben Affleck

Us rating: ***

Ben Affleck does double duty on this engrossing romantic thriller, both directing and assuming the lead role. As a career criminal in Boston, he falls in love with the bank manager (Rebecca Hall) abducted by his crew during a heist — a scenario that’s further complicated by his short-fused accomplice (Jeremy Renner). TV’s Jon Hamm and Blake Lively make a leap to the big screen as a fed and a druggie mom, respectively. But it’s Affleck the filmmaker who really scores: His strong storytelling sense makes this Town worth the visit.

Review: I’m Still Here

Joaquin Phoenix hop-hips

Us rating: **

In 2008, Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix allowed brother-in-law Casey Affleck to shoot him as he transitioned from acting to music. By turns funny, disgusting and outright sad, I’m Still Here shows Phoenix performing lame original hip-hop and bemoaning the price of fame — while also having sex with prostitutes and snorting drugs. Was it all a hoax? The doc intrigues and irritates because it’s unclear whether viewers are watching Phoenix at play, or are being played themselves.

Machete Review

September 3, 2010 By Thelma Leave a Comment

Us Rating: ***

Jessica Alba‘s immigration officer is one of many shapely women throwing themselves at Machete (hatchet-faced Danny Trejo), a Mexican cop who’s fleeing a drug lord (Steven Seagal), in this vibrant flick set in Texas. The gory B-movie about corruption — which codirectors Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis deliberately shot to look schlocky — pops with stunt casting: Lindsay Lohan caricatures her persona as the druggie daughter of a politico, baring her breasts while videotaping a three-way. And while Oscar winner Robert De Niro joins in as a crooked senator, the movie’s biggest feat is putting perennial supporting player Trejo (the Spy Kids series) center stage, where his gravity and deadpan delivery galvanize the action.
