Review: The Town

September 19, 2010 By Thelma Leave a Comment

Rebecca Hall, Ben Affleck

Us rating: ***

Ben Affleck does double duty on this engrossing romantic thriller, both directing and assuming the lead role. As a career criminal in Boston, he falls in love with the bank manager (Rebecca Hall) abducted by his crew during a heist — a scenario that’s further complicated by his short-fused accomplice (Jeremy Renner). TV’s Jon Hamm and Blake Lively make a leap to the big screen as a fed and a druggie mom, respectively. But it’s Affleck the filmmaker who really scores: His strong storytelling sense makes this Town worth the visit.

Toronto: Black Swan is the Oscar Front-runner

September 18, 2010 By Thelma Leave a Comment

Natalie Portman

From Gold Derby at Latimes.com:

Thelma Adams (Us Weekly, Thelmadams.com) sends us her Oscar scouting report from Canada: “Out of Toronto, ‘Black Swan’ is immediately the front-runner in the Oscar race, the one to beat. That means best picture, best actress Natalie Portman, best director Darren Aronofsky, best screenplay, best supporting actor Vincent Cassel (who’s about to get a lot more work in America), and possibly even a campaign for best supporting actress for Barbara Hershey -– a campaign but not necessarily a nomination.”
